Great Message from Pope Benedict on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows

I have a special devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows, so it's nice to see this great encouragement from our Holy Father on her feast day.

Pontiff Tells Youth Not to Fear Cross

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 15, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Referring to today's feast of Our Lady of Sorrows,
Benedict XVI is encouraging youth to stay next to the cross like Mary did.

The Pope made this recommendation at the end of today's general audience, during his
traditional greeting to youth, the sick and newlyweds.

"Today we remember Our Lady of Sorrows, who with faith stayed next to the cross of her Son,"
he said. "Dear young people, like Mary, do not be afraid to stay next to the cross. The Lord will
instill in you the courage to overcome every obstacle in your daily life."

Referring to the sick, the Holy Father made a similar recommendation: that they find in Mary the
"consolation and support to learn the salvific value of suffering from the crucified Christ."

Finally, he encouraged newlyweds to have confidence in turning to the Virgin of Sorrows in
moments of difficulty. "With her maternal intercession," he said, she "will help you to face" such
moments.

I love this antiphon for the Canticle of Zechariah from morning prayer in the breviary for today:
"Rejoice, O Sorrowful Mother; after your great sufferings, you shine forth as Queen, enthroned beside your Son."
Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.
